I work in tech. Prior to COVID, I worked in the office exclusively, every single day. Commuted 30+ minutes each way, sat in traffic, had great times in the office, lunch with colleagues, etc. etc. etc.
From March 2020 to March 2021 I was exclusively WFH, since then I've been hybrid (office 1 or 2 days a week and home 3 days a week). Note that these observations are for my role at tech companies. This won't apply to an engineering firm or a nurse or even entry level SDRs or sales people at a tech company. Some observations:
Benefits of the Office
- I need the office SOMETIMES. Just having the occasional socializing is legit important for my mental health. This surprised me btw.
Benefits of WFH
- I get A LOT MORE done at home than I do at the office. It's not even close. No more random pop-ins to my office from people, fewer pointless discussions and fewer pointless meetings.
- Meetings are faster at home. At the office there's always chit-chat before and after meetings. Zoom seems to largely eliminate that.
- FAR FEWER OFFICE POLITICS - When you're at the office, it's pretty easy for groups of sales people, marketers, dev guys, etc. etc. to get together and complain about something or talk about a manager under their breath or complain about the company in some way. That stuff is nearly entirely eliminated with WFH. Why? Because you aren't calling a colleague to complain about something. You might Slack them about something, but you aren't doing an impromptu complain session.
- Save Money - I do LOVE the money I save not going into the office every day.
- Seeing the Family - When I needed a break at the office I'd shut my door and watch YouTube or go out and talk to people (disturbing their workday), but now I go out and play Madden with my kids or play basketball with them outside for 10 minutes. I feel like I've been much more engaged in their childhood than I was leaving at 7:15 and getting home at 6:00 every day.
- I can't stand commuting. It just feels like I'm wasting time.
- I also LOVE the flexibility to take my wife to lunch, leave at 4:30 to take my boys to practice or whatever.
Simply put: I won't take another job that requires me to go in every day. There are certainly challenges with WFH (you've got to have a good office space obviously and a spouse/kids who don't take advantage of it), but if you have those things...it's simply better for everyone.
