The Honda genuine part is $27 online, with the Honda genuine o-ring an additional $8. Dealers get to mark their parts up, that's understood. Let's be generous and allow a 285% markup. A bit extreme, but it gets us to an even $100. Let's allow another $100 for the dealer to diagnose the problem (that code reader takes a long time to plug in). That gets us to $200.

This part sits directly on top the engine and would take any decent mechanic a grand total of 5 minutes to swap. Let's assume a really crappy mechanic and grant him a full hour cause it took him 55 minutes to find his tools cause he really is a crappy mechanic and doesn't know where he left them. At any rate, most dealers charge a minimum of 1 hr labor for anything other than an oil change, and the oil change rate is only because they have to compete with all the quick lube places. An honest mechanic would include these 5 minutes with the hour he charged to plug in his code reader, but fine, that's another $100 with the included shop fees. That gets us to a very generous $300 for what is 5 minutes worth of labor mixed with $35 worth of parts.

So, please, feel free to enlighten me where the other $200 worth of work can be found.
