There are great examples from the past. Bear in mind the MWC, WAC, and AAC have always been considered "weak" when compared to the BCS and P6/5 conferences. (and also remember the Big (L)East ALWAYS finished the season as the higher rated conference by a mile over the MWC even though they trailed the MWC several times going into conference play. Funny how that worked.)

TCU (especially the year they played BSU in BCS bowl. That was how they handled have two non-BCS teams included. Cowards were afraid if both TCU and BSU won separate BCS bowls it would show how bad the system really was.)
Beck had BYU humming by the end of the season. If not for early losses before BYU "matured" I am sure we go deep in a playoff tournament.
