Arguing that every G5 team should get an autobid is arguing that play on the field should *not* matter. Here are some games that are happening this week:
C-USA Championship - North Texas (7-5, 6-2) vs. UTSA (10-2, 8-0)
MAC Championship - Toledo (7-5, 5-3) vs. Ohio (9-3, 7-1)
Say that Toledo and North Texas win.
Toledo lost to San Diego State, Buffalo, Bowling Green, and Western Michigan this year. Oh, and they lost to Ohio State 77-21.
North Texas lost to SMU, Memphis, UTSA (by 4 on the road), UAB, and UNLV (58 to 27!).
In a 12 team playoff, they would get in over Tennessee, Penn State, and Clemson.
You're arguing that play on the field should matter, and I agree 100%. Put in a Cincinnati, who goes undefeated. Heck, I might even be ok with a team going 11-1 making it. Guarantee the two highest G5 champions. I'm cool with all of that. But you can't say "play on the field should matter, therefore a 7-5 Toledo should get in over 10-2 Tennessee because Toledo was the best crappy team.
