Roderick had one clear success- Zach Wilson, and that wasn't a recruiting success, it appears.. It is fair to ask, though, whether Wilson would have had such a great final year if we had played a normal difficulty schedule in a non-COVID year. Zach may not have been a first round draft pick in a normal year, and his performance in the NFL has definitely not been first-round worthy. Other than Wilson, QB recruiting has been abominably bad, especially for QB's coming right out of HS. Normally BYU has no trouble finding a top-tier LDS QB every 2-3 years but it has been an awfully long time since one has committed to BYU.
You might call Slovis a recruiting success because he signed an NFL free agent deal after the season, but if you looked at on-field performance this year, I doubt anyone thought that the NFL was in his future. He looked very average in Roderick's system. If Slovis was a better player than he showed this year, that's a coaching failure.
