You can blame Bronco for
1) Wiffing on Jake Heaps and not having a real back-up plan. Because let's face it, if Jake were really the NFL caliber QB we all expected, playing with the support of that defense in his years, NO ONE would be calling for Bronco's head today -- no matter who the OC was during Jake's tenure.

2) Questionable Coordinator hires. BYU should not be a proving ground for inexperienced coordinators. Although I do recall many BYU fans were super happy when Anae left the first time... for some stupid reason or other.

As we sit here today with a guy who is barely on scholarship playing QB and looking sideways at yet another odd coordinator hire, it would appear Bronco hasn't learned to deal with either major issue yet.

So then it becomes a question of do you fire the guy for those things.

Unless you have a PROVEN commodity that is a clear upgrade (someone I haven't seen suggested as a realistic replacement), I say no.

Why?

1) Because Bronco has proven he and his staff can recruit potentially good QB's. He is bringing in the talent. There is a question of keeping the QB talent in the program.

Part of that turnover may be due to turnover at OC. I think Anae is settled now though.

2) He can motivate players. That's clear from the defense when he runs it.

3) His performance is NOT mediocre no matter how many times the fire-Bronco ilk throw out the word. He's the 24th active winningest coach. Try going to a potential replacement and telling them that is not good enough... see how far that interview goes.

4) I think a bunch of BYU fans have unrealistic expectations of the program's ceiling. Yes they should not be losing to USU. Then again they should not be going into Texas and dropping historic YEWT kickings on them either.

Lavell Edwards had Steve Young, Marc Wilson, Ty Detmer, Jimmy Mac, etc and ALL of them still lost games. When Lavell had a run of bad QB's, his record looked just like Bronco's the last four years.

Bronco has proven again THIS YEAR that he can get BYU into the national spotlight with a Heisman quality QB and with winning.

I don't think the jury is out on Bronco and I really don't think BYU should fire him for an (at best) untested commodity.
