Whitt has had a similar problem recruiting and developing the QB position...
...both Whitt and Bronco are defensive-minded coaches who have both made poor OC hiring decisions, have had issues attracting and evaluating talent and building depth at QB.. It's an interesting parallel.

Bronco inherited John Beck and was fortunate that Max Hall wanted to transfer here. That bought him all his success in his first 5 yrs.

We had QB's in the system with good potential (Munns, Lark, etc). Before the 2009 season Riley Nelson transfered in and became Max's heir apparent and the coach's darling. Both Doman and Bronco fell in love with him.

Munns and Lark went on missions and came back rusty and due to bad timing, the focus by coaches on Nelson and Heaps and not capitalizing on brief opportunities they had to shine, they went largely undeveloped.

Brad Sorenson was also on the team in 2009 (R/S) but was so buried on the depth chart and ignored by coaches, saw the writing on the wall (Riley was being groomed) and knew he'd get no shot so he transferred to SUU, broke several school records and was drafted in the 7th round of the NFL draft.

In 2010 Heaps arrived and mixing him with Riley created a bad odor for the team. Both Riley and Heaps were busts, Heaps left for Kansas and Riley ruined the 2012 season and one of the best defenses in the history of the program. We never really got to see what any other QB could do (Lark did have a 6 TD game vs NMSU).

2013 saw BYU get a new OC, a new QB and a new offense which equated to a lot of struggles offensively but it saw the emergence of a star.

It's hard to say really from that overview if Bronco is very good at managing the offensive side of the team, personally I don't think he is. The 2 OC's he's had have had mixed results. Doman never stood out as a QB coach or an OC (his fast paced offense kind of fizzled) and Anae has been pretty good but not great. Other than Beck, we've survived by getting QB transfers and that's been hit or miss (Hall-good, Nelson-not good, Hill-good) and always dodged the QB injury bullet until the last couple of seasons (when we've tried to employ a more mobile approach to the position. Hmmmm.....).

I think one thing that was definitely different between 2009 and 2010 was all of the OL's that Crowton had recruited were gone (Feinga, Bright, Dallas Reynolds, etc) and playing in the NFL and the guys we had back on the field for 2010 were Bronco's recruits.

We have not had decent OL play ever since and that unit has failed to get a player drafted in the NFL since Crowton. Bronco has never had an OL get drafted during his tenure and only one of his OL's iirc (that he's recruited) has made a roster (Matt Reynolds).

Bronco inherited some good players from Crowton that were able to get drafted in the NFL but on his own he has been severely stunted in his ability to recruit and develop players and get them drafted into the NFL. This is a big part of Bronco's failing as a football coach and why things seem so different before and after the 2010 season. No more Crowton players starting in 2010 (Matt Putnam was the lone exception in 2010.)

There's a definite connection with being able to attract and develop talent well enough to get them onto NFL rosters. That translates into success on the college gridiron. Look at the success programs like Boise St, Utah and TCU have had on the field in the past 10 yrs or so and in getting their players into the NFL.
