BYU is winning over bad teams to mediocre teams
Granted the team was better under Taysom Hill, but look at BYU's win record since Max Hall left:

2010: 6-6, with losses to Utah State, Air Force, Nevada and Utah, culminating with a New Mexico Bowl win over Utep
2011: 10-3, first year of Indy with a very sorry schedule. BYU lost to every strong team on the schedule: Texas, TCU and Utah, eked out a win over Tulsa in the Armed Forces Bowl
2012: 7-5, lost to Utah, Boise State, Oregon State, ND and San Jose State, won over SDSU in bowl game based solely on KVN
2013: 8-4, inexplicable loss to UVA who could not beat another FBS team that year, Texas win is the best in 5 years, then 4th consecutive loss to Utah, Wisconsin and ND, beaten by 15 against Washington in bowl game

Here we are in 2014 with 4 losses already and 2 games to go. In all these years, the only game to really brag about was Texas in Provo in 2013. BYU hasn't had double digit wins in any season except for the WAC-heavy 2011 Indy debut. The October 2014 losses were to MWC and AAC teams, none of whom are ranked now.

The only defense for Bronco is that he wins, but he wins in a very soft schedule. If BYU played Utah's schedule, they would probably have 2-4 wins all season. That is not the type of program looking to move up to the majors. It is one that will be moving to the AAC or MWC in a couple of seasons and never be at the same level as Utah or TCU again.
