I did a pretty in-depth review of the literature when we were trying to consider our options. Basically the conclusion was that natural birth practices for low risk moms (that's the critical criteria) is not really riskier. It's pretty much a wash.

Now for the low percentage of births that have problems---THAT'S when medical intervention absolutely can save lives.

That's why really the best thing would be a birthing center attached to a hospital. For the many moms, it would be safe and a better experience, while keeping the hospital surgical ward close by for unexpected emergencies. It would also save insurance companies and individuals a TON of money. I really wish we had more of that kind of option.
