While on my mission in southern Indiana, I had plenty of contact with MLMs
I was in an unbelievably rural area (the county seat had a population of 800 people - the next town over had a Mexican restaurant and 450 residents), but the ward was into doTERRA. One or two gung-ho sisters kind of ran the show, but pretty much everyone was into it.

Later that summer, a young couple came through selling Living Scriptures. They somehow got a hold of the branch and ward rosters for that region, and were hitting up families to sell video collections (we found out about this when a member invited them and us over for dinner on the same night - they tried to hijack our lesson/spiritual thought and turn it into a sales pitch). This really bugged me, because a lot of the members didn't have a lot of disposable money, but ordered videos because they thought that they were official LDS videos. After about two weeks of the Living Scriptures sales, the New Albany Stake President had all the Bishops and Branch Presidents warn the members about the Living Scriptures people, which pretty much ended that. To my knowledge, though, doTERRA is still going strong out there.

A few of the older members in my mission were Shackley reps.

I can assure you that it's not just a Utah thing - Mormons from the boonies of Indiana and Kentucky were VERY into MLMs!
