I grew up a die hard Ute fan and I'm speaking from my own experience also
I was a Ute fan for almost my entire life. I mean die hard. We traveled to their bowl games, we went to see them play Stanford in the sweet 16. I loved the Utes.

Then I got married and my step son went to play for BYU (which I was not happy about by the way) but I decided that I would try to put my BYU biases aside and route for them so long as he was on the team. Now mind you, I never hated BYU like many Ute fans. It was a good natured rivalry in my mind. I used to love the Ronny Mac and Lavell commercials and thought of it as a fun thing.

For his entire first year at BYU, I continued to cheer for Utah the entire season. I watched most their games, I cheered for them to win every game. Then came the last game of the year, BYU at Utah. I mentioned to my family that it would be so weird going to RES and not being able to cheer for them. I also said that I hoped BYU won because I wanted my step son to be happy but that I would still be ok if the Utes won because they had always been my team.

I went to RES with my husband and daughter and we were wearing BYU jerseys with my step son's number on them. That completely changed my perception of the Utes. The disgusting way I was treated and the way other fans around me were treated was truly eye opening! I was shocked and appalled!

After that, I knew I could never cheer for a team whose fan base behaved this way. Needless to say, after that, I became 100% committed to BYU and my heart is now true blue and I have never looked back!
