So by your standard
Lavell would have been stagnant between 92-95 with 8, 6 and 7 seasons in that span and 3 losses to Utah. Funny how that stagnant program then went 14-1 in '96.
Winning 8+ games in 9 of 11 seasons is not stagnant. Stagnant is lingering around .500 several straight years, missing out on a bowl a couple of seasons and not showing the upswing in young talent that BYU has brought in or has coming in.
You can think there is someone out there that will turn BYU into more than it is now, but it ain't gonna happen. BYU will be what they have always been. An above average to very good non-P5 team that is able to put it all together and give us a magical season once a decade or so. Regardless of what some think, Bronco, while not yet in Lavell's company, is the second best coach BYU has ever had and is so be a comfortable margin.

I don't think you can use the "before the season" example because after week one, we saw glimpses of what could be.
