Are you certain he has abandoned the short passing game, or is it Tanner looking
deep more than short? It is hard for me to tell that watching on TV. when I am at the games, I can see the field better and there seems to be on many plays short and long pass routes on many plays. TV gives me myopia. I have watched in the games when I have been there that Tanner seems to look long more than short, and early on made wrong reads.
It is also possible that film showed that USU was vulnerable on the deeper routes, which actually turned out to be true. BYU exploited this on several plays.

I don't think you can use the "before the season" example because after week one, we saw glimpses of what could be.
