You brought up attendance...and Disgruntled Bronco critics were a tiny portion
of that problem... He was mentioning the biggest factor which was the quality of the home schedule.
I would throw in ticket prices, lousy opponents in freezing cold November, Plus Independence led to much better TV coverage and accessibility.
BYU fans had a choice to watch the game on ESPN in HD in their living room against a lesser opponent. Whereas if you wanted to watch BYU play a lesser opponent pre independence, you pretty much had to attend the game.
The anti-Bronco crowd is a relatively small group of people who are very vocal and mostly anonymous.

I don't think you can use the "before the season" example because after week one, we saw glimpses of what could be.
