here's what they should say if they are being honest

Every campus has traditions and standards. At BYU there is a standard of not making caffeinated drinks available for sale on campus. This standard is based largely on long-held tradition. BYU students are welcomed to make their caffeinated soda purchases else ware.

If they said this, I would disagree with the reasoning but I would have no issue with BYU
