I was talking to someone recently who basically said a lot of these four and five star ratings come out of the summer camps and not necessarily from their play in high school. Many of these camps are non-contact camps and thus they are similar to the NFL combine in that the ratings are based on measurables.

This is certainly why someone like Britain Covey got such a poor rating coming out of high school. The perception was that he was too small to succeed at the next level. But as someone who saw him play several times in high school he was a little man among boys and it's no wonder why he led Timpview to three straight state championships.
