First, Japanese Americans, Indian Americans (from India, not native Americans) and other Asian groups have significantly higher incomes, significantly lower substance abuse, and disproportionately lower incarceration rates exactly for the reasons discussed - they are far more likely to get married before having kids, stay married after having them, and have far lower rates of substance use (and abuse). University educated white Americans (and university educated Americans of any race, really) are somewhat less vulnerable to the effects of single parenthood and alcohol consumption simply because they have more $ and can mitigate some of the effect that they would otherwise suffer as a result of those behaviors.

For instance, the college educated woman who has a child out of wedlock is more likely to be able to afford good daycare for that child than a mother working a low paying job. The college educated man (or woman) is more likely to have the time off and resources to deal with substance problems than the poor person. Wealth can offset some of the effects. But if you are already poor, these life choices can be devastating.
