Yup, this is purely surface data so serves more as a launching point
Cal and TCU have high population within 100 miles so score well there for delivering a market... but don't actually have a strong presence in that market.
Texas Tech is the opposite. There's only 586k people within 100 miles of that campus since it's in the middle of nowhere. But they are a fairly rare exception in that they do draw a sizable number of fans beyond that 100 mile radius.
Considerations like that matter. For the B1G, ACC, PAC academics matter (or at least they did for the PAC, they probably don't as much now), so other teams will move up or down based on that.
The SEC cares more about geography than the B1G does. So this list isn't the be-all, end-all. It's a loose ranking that gives a pretty good idea as a starting point and is open to modification/interpretation as needed
