My mom didn't go to BYU, and she was jumping up and down with my dad and my brothers when we'd watch the games on TV. She's also a convert having joined the Church in college, but your point is still right on--she's LDS and she views BYU as the LDS school. She feels a deep connection to BYU based on her membership in the Church alone.
