In my experience, the Northeast is not indicative
of the general representative sample of BYU fans/alumni that you will find in LDS wards in most other parts of the country. I lived in Connecticut for several years and also served a mission there and in upstate New York, and I think the main reason is because the church is still so small, not growing very fast, and there are still so many first generation convert members of the church making up LDS wards back there that have no ties to the state of Utah or BYU whatsoever (outside of well-populated areas like Boston, etc.)

I have lived in 5 states in every general part of the country (except the South and Northwest) over my 40+ years. My wards in San Diego, Las Vegas, and Ohio were easily majority BYU support/ties compared to combined local universities and other Utah-related schools (USU and U of U).

My San Diego ward was probably 95% BYU, 5% other. Las Vegas ward (present) is probably 90% 10%, with a few smatterings of U and UNLV supporters. Ohio was probably 75% BYU, 25% Ohio State.

I spent a couple of weeks in my brother's ward last summer in Texas -- it was easily 75% BYU, 25% UT. There are a ton of BYU alumni in the Austin area. BYU is represented all over the place there. I was amazed.
