The Big 12 will eventually go back to 12, if it survives. If/when it goes to 12, BYU will likely be one of those teams. If it doesn't survive, BYU doesn't want to and won't sacrifice all it has set up as an indy to go down with a sinking ship and have to do it all over, dealing with the bridges it burnt as well.
There is very little reason, other than irrational impatience from fans, to jump the gun on a move to the Big 12 right now. That doesn't mean it isn't in the works or won't happen in a couple years, but it's not as simple as just switching conferences with your xbox controller in NCAA 11.
