There is SOME overlap in typical physiques with those positions.
But in addition to soccer requiring more cardio endurance, soccer doesn't require the same raw athleticism in terms of anaerobic speed and power, even though anaerobic speed is a benefit (think Kylian Mbappe).

So the overlap is limited. And certainly an NFL running or defensive back is not going to necessarily outcompete a Christian Pulisic or Josh Sargent.

So the "our best athletes are not choosing soccer and that is why we are not that good" argument is extremely limited at best and is more likely completely false.
