comes down to how popular the sport is in the US. The chicks don't come to the soccer games to watch the guys. Just isn't happening. The decisions on what sport to pursue seriously happens in the early teen years. I'm sure the US in general can do a much better job at developing their players along the way but if the kids aren't choosing the sport by age 14, it isn't happening. Look at all the other Olympic sports in the US. They suffer the exact same fate. There is no motivation to be a luger so you don't get the athletes to choose luge and spend all the time needed to develop the skills necessary.
