My MIL had a similar situation when my FIL was admitted to an IHC hospital with
a brain aneurysm. She didn't have a choice in hospital as the ambulance had to take him to the closest one to them. They tried charged her for something like $150K+ over what the allowed amount was by the insurance (which took her past OOP Max). It took a couple of years of fighting it and filing appeals and them trying to send it to collections on a couple of occasions but she was finally able to get them to write it off.
