Once a bill goes to collections, the hospital/doctor/practice may be contractually prohibited from dealing directly with you. It depends on their arrangement with the collections agent.

In any event, it's an easy out for them, "Since it's gone to collections, there's nothing we can do. You'll have to talk to the collections agency."
