If we went Indy in the 90s, Utah would not be in the P5
Indy seperates us from the rest of the G5. If we had gone Indy in the 90s, it would have hurt Utah's program very bad, and the Pac 12 would not have invited them.
When you say BYU should join a conference, you have to realize that it will lower our prestiege and desirability, while raising the prestiege and desirability of other teams - just like Utah and TCU. It is much better to build our own brand, than build up the brand of conference mates.

You have to take the statement in context. The context is competing with P5 schools as an independent is not sustainable
