at BYU is not really accurate. He already had significant exposure to NBA scouts before he even started college. With all the big high school events that take place, top high school players have already been heavily scouted before the college season starts.
Furthermore, if you think a team of NBA scouts is unable to thoroughly evaluate kids all across the country because they only have time to concentrate on the Dukes and Kentuckys of the college world is silly. There would be endless examples of this. Here are some obvious examples --
Terrance Ferguson and Emmanuel Mudiay were drafted after they skipped college and played professionally overseas. Dante Exum didn't even play the year before he was drafted. Cameron Payne was a lottery pick out of Murray St. RJ Hunter played at Georgia St. Richaun Holmes played at Bowling Green.
I could keep going and going.
It's a scouts job to be familiar with every potential NBA prospect in their assigned area. They don't just ignore schools because they aren't the biggest names.
