I think it's more likely that things play out as your friend suggested

than that BYU becomes competitive in the top echelon of college football, and increasingly there's going to be less and less middle ground. I would guess it would take more like 15-20 years rather than the five your friend predicted, but I could definitely see things heading in that direction.
