When I say "missionary tool", I'm referring exclusively to proselytizing non-members. I'm sure we get a few converts to the church off BYU football, but not anything that's statistically significant to the point that the church is going to say "we need to spend more money on this."  To your point that the football program is a valuable retention tool: yes, that is exactly what I was saying, but perhaps not as clearly.
