My son was being recruited (for track) by 2 PAC schools, an SEC school and 1 Big12 school (and a mass of D2/3 schools). He visited BYU and that was the end of it. He loved BYU, loved the mountains, the atmosphere at the school and just everything about it. His mother and I tried to convince him to take a scholarship somewhere else, but he said "BYU is where I'm supposed to be", so we're paying our own way and he's happy with his choice.
At one point in his high school life he said he didn't think it mattered where he got his undergraduate degree, as long as the school he attended was paying for it. A visit to BYU changed that thinking.
(The day he after he made his decision, his mission call came and he spent 8 months of his mission as a YSA missionary on BYU campus).
