The article said that he was in a program that allowed him to make payments based on income. After 25 years any remaining amount is forgiven. But the forgiven amount is taxed as ordinary income. Because he is paying less than the interest, the loan continues to grow. It’s estimated to be over $2 million by the 25 year mark.
