...that bugs me. It's the victim mentality, and belief that he's owed something.
I'm no accountant, but it looks like if he upped what he was paying on his loan in order to pay it off he'd still be bringing home around $65K-$70K a year. Not enough to live the high life - but there are a lot of people living on that or a lot less.
Maybe you don't buy a house for $400K and drive a tesla and your situation improves.
As someone who has lived on the edge and gone without while I've watched some folks I know buy up the world, and then declare bankruptcy only to come out the other side with all the toys, nicer cars, bigger homes, etc. It's just disappointing. I don't know how people live like that without some level of guilt.
