...come the start of the season but the addition of Grimes as OC and some of the position coaches he hired have appeared to bring the beginnings of a new culture to the offense. I think Kalani has learned about the importance of how he shapes his organizational leadership team and being laid back isn’t bad but having too many guys who are like that is.

Yeah, last year was bad, historically bad. It’s done and in the past and steps have been taken to correct mistakes from last year. It’s not like this is the first time there have been culture issues that affected on the field play. Bronco has had a number of them in the latter half of his career. In 2011 his team quit half way through the Utah game and handed us the most embarrassing loss in the history of the rivalry. There was such a significant locker room divide in 2011 that guys were tanking the first half of the Utah St game not playing hard until Bronco made a switch at QB. TV announcers kept remarking in the 2nd half at how it looked like an entirely different team that came out of the locker room because the energy level was so different.

Bronco had another season (2014) where a number of defensive starters were suspended to open the season. This was the first year that he handed over the reigns of the defense to Nick Howell and things didn’t go well as our defense was soft in a number of games we lost but should’ve won. Players weren’t happy with Howell and they revolted and Bronco lashed back. In defense of Howell he publicly threw players under the bus for the performance problems on the field.

It happens (hard to manage a group of 105 young guys and get them all focused into one cohesive unit). The hope is it isn’t allowed to continue and become the prevailing culture of the program. We won’t know for certain until we start playing some games but it certainly seems Kalani has made necessary changes to improve the culture of the team.
