That’s pretty interesting actually. I wonder if special effects have something
to do with it? Maybe as effects have gotten better and better, audiences want them more and more? Like, we’re not that interested in Tom Hanks acting like a grown up kid in Big. We want massive dinosaurs and super hero’s and explosions and space. Etc.

Also, your point earlier about drama moving to tv is probably important. Breaking Bad and the Sopranos are massively popular. They’re on tv now. In the 80s, tv was pretty terrible. “Prestige” was in movies and fluff was on tv. Now it sort of feels opposite.
