They are movies that generally translate to global audiences. Another factor is Hollywood is chasing global audience more than ever, and comic book, sequels, and dumb action movies appeal more broadly across cultures and languages. Comedies and John Hughes movies, not so much.
Also, making and marketing large Hollywood movies is more expensive than ever, so they place safe bets on sure things like sequels, comics, and intl.
Great movies are still out there and more movies than ever are available, they just aren't all going the Hollywood, theater release route. Also, TV, as someone pointed out.
