Plans for the name change had been in discussed before Bednar became president
Dropping the athletic programs was also being discussed but it was Bednar that pushed for it shortly after he became president of Ricks College.
Edit: It was presented as the major cost savings to help pay for the transition to four year degrees. Unfortunately, nobody could really offer a good counter-argument since BYU-I would have needed to transition from JC to the now FCS division — which would have cost even more money.
