I agree with part of your sentiment, but the biggest reason for the demise of
football (the only sport besides basketball that I care about and we could discuss basketball another time) has been that Lavell retired. With Lavell went a lot of credibility and power at BYU that has been hard to overcome.
Even Bronco after 10 years with the program only had a fraction of the influence that Lavell did. You really think the honor code office was going to yell at Lavell or tell him what to do? You think the other coaches were going to try and schedule practices (I know they didn't have the indoor practice facility yet) when Lavell would want the space? You think coaches anywhere were going to bad mouth Lavell other than perhaps calling him old?
We may never have another Lavell again in Provo. He was a much bigger reason for the demise of BYU football than Ricks was (and clearly Ricks brought BYU value).
God Bless Lavell, he was one of a kind.
