The Heaps effect coincided with a change at OC from Anae to Doman...
Had Anae stayed, I think Heaps also stays and performs well. Of course, that probably means no Taysom Hill at BYU.
As far as the LP3, I tend to agree with you that the team had a decline. Mika departing early was probably the biggest hit. I feel like the Emery situation had a bigger negative effect on the team performance/morale than we know. Still, I don't think BYU would have been better off without them.
