So was it more of a failure to develop him from a coaching standpoint or was it
more him hitting a wall/ceiling as a player? The best answer is probably both. I believe with better coaching that Heaps second season could have turned out better than it did. But I also believe that Heaps own limitations irregardless of coaching had dire consequences for BYU. Just look at what happened to BYU and Utah since that time. Look what happened to recruiting. Look at what happened to ranking. Look what happened over time. He couldn't elude pass rushers. He wasn't hitting receivers. BYU didn't look like the BYU under Max Hall and John Beck who were better competitors. I'm just being honest when I say its easier to scapegoat Heaps because he left the program. I'm willing to give a guy until his senior year to judge his time at BYU. Heaps left without fighting for his job back. That left a bad taste in my mouth because I felt like had unfinished business and untapped potential. I think Taysom Hill could have saved BYU, but his injuries were also a huge blow to BYU's football program. I just don't think we have recovered from those two things. Was Heaps the victim of a bad situation? Or did he lead to the bad situation? Was it the Doman hire? Can you truly say its all on Doman and none of it is on Heaps? I can't. I think a lot of it is on Heaps himself. Had he gone elsewhere and played really well he could have maybe changed that narrative in my head but his after BYU career kind of confirms my narrative. He was a great high school QB and a good practice QB thereafter.
