I just look at what happened post Max Hall and it was supposed to be Heaps
coming in and taking over and being the next guy like Beck and Hall and the fact that he didn't work out lead to a cascade of events. If he lived up to his expectations I think a lot of things that came after could have happened differently. Was it him or was it coaching? I honestly feel like it heaps himself had a lot to do with it. Yes he brought in some other guys...stout, apo, but at the end of the day it looking back on it i dont think they improved the program from what it was right before they came, so i have to put some of the blame on them. I was glad initially when he chose BYU. Everybody was. But looking back i wonder what would have happened had he not come and would it have worked out better. I think BYU gets complacent sometimes with these highly rated recruits and doesn't develop them and those around them properly. I think its possible that in a world where Heaps goes to UW and we go with the next man up that perhaps things go better in the post Max Hall Era. Those initial embarassing losses to Utah under Heaps set the tone for a long decade of frustration for BYU football. The decade prior had some heroes. Guys that would make game winning plays in rivalry games. But I think Heaps not working out was a major turning point in BYU football history. How many wins do we have vs Utah since Max Hall left?
