This assumes that those who have caught the virus are identical to the remaining population that have not.

Some are more susceptible, some are more exposed, and the remaining population may have already resisted or may never be fully exposed. To keep assuming that growth curve, you have to make assumptions that the remaining 99.975% of Americans who have not caught the virus are identical in makeup and situation to the 0.025% who have. The current trend will not extrapolate straight through uniformly.
