I never eat sauce on brisket — the rub should make a great bark

Sauce is for mediocre meat that needs something to compensate for the lack of flavor.

(Of course, I realize that the rub is an artificial flavor source too . . . I suppose its the one I prefer.)

Tri-Tip is ruined nearly 100% of the time when it is smoked, IMO.

Not ruined if you smoke it to 115-120, reverse sear it until medium rare, and then top it with black pepper sauce.

A good rub tends to complement the beef flavor, while a bbq sauce tends to overpower it IMO.
