The walk on program that has given us many more kids than anywhere else - including TA - was the only way to fight the built in advantages of P5 teams. That program required great coaches and the resources to pick out kids better than anyone else.
This isn’t about resources. It is about a new and different marketplace. A marketplace where we have no shot to keep great assistants without substantial raises and now an explosive marketplace for developed and capable head coaches.
And it is about an old reality that BYU and the private sector in Utah - especially the Utah Valley - have long enjoyed. Historically people have taken less to work and live in Utah than if they left the state. It was true for me as a lawyer. It is true for many many other positions. The professional staff at BYU takes a pay cut because it is such a privilege to be there. It is just worked that way there for years.
