I’m not 100% on this, but a large portion of achieving R1 is dependent on the
amount of money spent toward conducting research, right? If that’s the case, I could see it being difficult for BYU to justify the decision.
The focus on research can spin out of control too, like others have noted here. Look at a school like WSU’s financials as an example of the negative, and how achieving R1 doesn’t necessarily equate to financial stability.
