I have found that most people want to code because thats all they know when they think about well paid IT jobs. There is way more in IT that is way easier to get into. Most people in your average IT department don't or can't code. It's not where I would choose to focus anymore.
If he wants an IT career he should major in CS and deal with the boring generals. That's part of life and getting an education. The degree will be a huge leg up. Now that he has a semester done, have him look into WGU for an online degree. I'm a WGU employee and grad. The curriculum is far more focused and includes industry certifications that will make him employable before he even graduates. There are more specialized undergrad degrees in cyber security and cloud engineering that in my opinion are FAR more valuable than just learning to code with no diploma.
