I would second this. If he want's to really do coding, get the degree it will
pay itself back with higher starting wage and more opportunities.

I say this as someone who didn't finish my degree and is a current software engineer. It can be done, but it will take extra effort and time doing it on your own and spending time after work to learn the things you could have learned in the classroom.

Trying it the way suggested is also a great way to figure out if that's the direction he wants to go.
