I can tell you that it is up to the MP. The church discourages it because their missions aren't over
Until they're released by their Stake President, but if families always understood how important their last few days are, the Church would have no problem with it. How many LDS families go to all 3 hours of Church when they travel. These same families will not enforce the missionary rules when they pick them up.
