Many mission presidents discourage it and there is some
peer pressure in that respect. However, it's not like they are going to send the missionary home over it--or actually, I guess they will.
I didn't want to go into tourist mode right after my mission; but I don't have a problem with anybody who chooses to do it that way.

I can tell you that it is up to the MP. The church discourages it because their missions aren't over
