We picked up all three of my sons from their missions. I did not want to but my wife insisted. It has been the best experiences of my life and possibly that of my wife and children. My youngest son indicated that picking up his older brothers was a key factor in his decision to go on a mission. It may not be for everyone, but do what you think is best for your children. Never had any resistance from the mission. Church even has a process for reimbursement of the missionary's travel home.
