To join larger conferences and be on par with big time programs. We're dying to be playing the likes of Kansas, Baylor, Texas, etc. But that hasn't worked out.
In football as an independent, we have at least been able to play big time games against big time programs, both home and away. But in basketball we have been used to playing in a much more competitive conference schedule, against teams who were arguably on par with those big time programs. Utah, sdsu, unlv, etc were all pretty great at basketball for a while.
But now, frankly, watching our team forced to play in a conference that, outside of Gonzaga and St. Mary's, is a compilation of a bunch of Mickey Mouse teams playing in Mickey Mouse arenas, is pretty frustrating considering what we were used to before the change.
You're right, BYU hasn't yet won the conference, but let's be honest. That's pretty much only because of gonzaga, and maybe st. Mary's. without gonzaga in the conference BYU would have multiple conference titles. You may not like that we think we are better than most of the WCC, but it's pretty much a matter of fact, not opinion.
I'm grateful that the WCC took us in. And I think it's a serviceable situation for us. But make no mistake, this is plan c for BYU. We are in the WCC merely out of necessity. If you want BYU fans to change their mindset in this regard, start hoping the other teams in the WCC start pulling their weight. Because until it becomes a boost to our rpi and not a huge hit to play against the majority of our conference foes, cougar fans are going to be wishing they were elsewhere. You want respect? Make this a four bid league, not 1-2 max.
